There are 7 steps of the hajj, which has been explained in this article. The activities performed during Hajj are the same which Prophet (PBUH) performed 1377 years ago. Allah says in the chapter three verse no 97 of Holy Quran:

“And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House – for whoever is able to find thereto a way.”

Chapter 3; verse 97

Hajj is one of the five pillars of islam.  All the different obligatory rite and duties performed during Hajj are known as Manasik Hajj. There are seven steps of Hajj that are performed during five or six days of Hajj. As you know that Hajj rituals start in the Dhul-Hijja, the 12th month of the Islamic calendar between the 8th and 13th of the month.

7 steps of the hajj – Hajj Process Explained:

7 steps of the hajj have been explained in detail in this article. All the steps of Hajj process are fully explained here. Go through the entire process to learn basics about it.

Day 1:

1: Wearing ihram:

Wearing Ihram is the first step of Hajj. It is sunnah to take bath before wearing Ihram. However if you cannot take bath, then you can simply perform ablution. Ihram consists of two white clothes for male, one is wrapped around the waist reaching down to the knees and the other is wrapped around the left shoulder and tied on the right side.

To hide the whole body without covering face and hands is the ihram of woman. After wearing ihram, all the forbidden activities should be strictly abandoned. After putting on the ihram, Talbiyah is invoked repeatedly:

“ labbayka -llāhumma labbayka, labbayka lā šarīka laka labbayka, ʾinna -l-ḥamda wa-n-niʿmata laka wa-l-mulka lā šarīka lak”.

“Here I am [at your service] O God, here I am. Here I am [at your service]. You have no partners (other gods). To You alone is all praise and all excellence, and to You is all sovereignty. There is no partner to You.”

The purpose of wearing Ihram is to promote equality because every believer is equal in the eyes of God. After wearing ihram, Tawwaf is performed. It is done on 8th of Dhul-Hijja before departing for Minna.

2: Spending a day till dawn at Mina:

After tawwaf, Pilgrims move toward mina. Mina is also called tent city because pilgrims will spend their time in camps in open area. Pilgrims perform five

at Mina. These prayers normally start with the noon prayer and end with fajar prayer.

Day 2:

3: Arafat

On 9th of Dhul-Hijja, pilgrims reach Arafat. It is a day of forgiveness. About the day of Arafah there are clear ahadiths. Aisha (RA) reported that Holy Prophet (pbuh) said:

“There is no day on which God frees people from the fire of hell than the day of Arafah.”

As you know that the day of Arafah is the most important day of Hajj. Standing at Arafat is one of the prime steps of Hajj. Holy Prophet stressed the importance of Arafat in these words:

“Hajj is Arafat.”

Pilgrims spend their entire day in offering prayers. Waqoof e Arafat is performed from zuhur to sunset. Waqoof means standing before God. Hajj sermon is also delivered at Mount Arafat.

Pilgrims offer Zuhr and Asr prayer at Masjid e Nimrah in Arafat. It is important for the pilgrimage to offer these two prayers at Arafat because, because otherwise their hajj will be considered unacceptable.

4: Night stay at Muzdalifah:

After the sunset, pilgrims leave for muzdalifah. At Muzdalifah, pilgrims offer Maghrib and Isha prayers. They spend their night doing worship under the sky. At dawn, they offer fajar prayer and leave for Mina.

Day 3:

5: Throwing stones at Devil and offering sacrifice:

Eid ul Adha is observed on 10th of Dhil-Hijjah. On this day pilgrims perform the first rammi, i.e; throwing seven stones at the largest of three columns. This act has a symbolic significance. When God commanded Ibrahim to sacrifice his son for the sake of God, It is believed that at this spot in mina, devil tried to discourage Ibrahim from following the command of God and Ibrahim threw stones at him. Millions of pilgrimage gather at the Jammarat bridge and cast stones at devil to enact this story.

After throwing stones at devil, pilgrims offer sacrifice. When Ibrahim went to sacrifice his son, he found that God had placed a lamb in place of his son at the time of sacrifice. In this way, Pilgrims slaughter a goat, sheep or cow after casting stones at devil. After performing this rite, pilgrims trim or shave their head cut nails and it is called as Halaq (shaving head) or Taqseer (trimming hair). Halaq is considered more superior than taqseer because it is the sunnah of Holy prophet. After this pilgrims remove Ihram with their ordinary clothes.

6: Tawaf at Masjid al Haram and Sa’e betwwn Safa and Marwa:

After removing ihram, pilgrims first perform tawwaf at Masjid al Haram and then perform sa’e between safa and marwa by walking seven times between safa and marwa. Allah says in the second chapter verse no 158 of the Holy quran:

“As-Safa and Al-Marwah (two mountains in Makkah) are of the Symbols of Allah. So it is not a sin on him who performs Hajj or Umrah (pilgrimage) of the House (the Kabah at Makkah) to perform the going (Tawaf) between them (As-Safa and Al-Marwah). And whoever performs good voluntarily, then verily, Allah is All-Recognizer, All-Knower.”

Chapter 2; verse 158

After this pilgrims drink plenty of water from Zam Zam. The pilgrims spend the night of 10th back at mina.

Day 4 and 5:

7: Casting stones at Devil

On the 11th Dhul-Hijjah, the pilgrims again throw pebbles at the three pillars in mina. On the 12th of Dhul-Hijjah, same practice of stoning the devil is repeated. Pilgrims can leave Mina for Makka before the sunset on 12th Dhul-Hijjah.  This is one fo the 7 steps of the hajj.

8: Tawaaf al wadaa:

It is a farewell tawwaf performed at the end of Hajj. Pilgrims circle the Kaaba seven times.

When all the activities and steps of Hajj are performed in a proper manner, it makes you punctual and more disciplined in your routine life. Moreover the believer gains the best reward from God. Holy Prophet (PBUH) said:

“Sound Hajj has no reward except Paradise.”

(Bukhari)
