Name of Angels and their duties

You must have learned that the belief in the angels of God is one of the fundamental beliefs in Islam. What are the name of angels and their prominent duties in Islam? Let’s find out in this article.

In Holy Quran, Allah says:

“The Messenger has believed in what was revealed on him from God, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in God and His angels and His books and His messengers.” 

(Al Baqra)

God has created angels from light. Angels obey the commands of God and worship him day and night. Angels are the creatures of God and they are found everywhere where they are needed with the permission of God. It is difficult to calculate or count the exact number of angels because they are present in each and every place of universe.

Types of Angels

There are different types of Angels. Each one of them has been given a responsibility by God. They worship God and comply with his orders. Among them four are archangels.

1: Gabriel

Gabriel is one of the most important angels. He is appointed by God to communicate the revelation or the commands of God to the Prophets. You can find his name in Quran at three places as rooh ul amen and rooh ul quds.

In Holy Quran God says:

“And indeed, the Qur’an is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds. The Rooh ul Amin has brought it down.”

(Al Shuara).  

In addition to Quran, he has been mentioned in hadith as An-namus.

2: Israfel (The Angel of Trumpet)

Israfel is the angel that will blow the trumpet on the judgment day. He is one of the four important angels. Israfel will blow the trumpet twice. In the first blow, doomsday will occur; while the second blowing will declare resurrection. About Israfel, Prophet (PBUH) said that he is waiting for the order to blow the trumpet, while grasping the trumpet.

3: Azrael (the angle of death)

Azrael has been entrusted by God with the duty of taking the souls of the people whose time of death has come. He is also known as Malk ul Mot which means the angel of death.

In Quran he is mentioned in Surah al Sajda as:

“The Angel of Death, put in charge of you, will (duly) take your souls: then shall ye be brought back to your Lord.” Naziat and Nashitat are the associates of Azrael.

They are given the task of taking the lives of non believers.


They are given the charge of taking the lives of believers.

4: Mikail

Mikail has been given the charge of managing the mundane requirements of humans, bringing the rain and cultivation of crops. In Holy Quran name of Mikail is mentioned in a verse:

“Whoever is an enemy to Allah and His angels and His messengers and Gabriel and Michael – then indeed, Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers.”

(Al baqra 98)

Besides these archangels there are some other angels that are very important and have been entrusted with some kind of responsibility from God.

5: Kiramin Katibin (Recording angels)

These angels work as attendants on you and are present at your right and left shoulders. They record good and bad deeds. They will come as witness on the judgment day. The name of angels (recording angels) can be further categorized into:

Raqib: Raqib sits on right shoulder to record good deeds of a person.

Atid: Atid sits on the left shoulder and records bad deeds performed by a person. Allah says:

“And most surely there are keepers over you. Honorable recorders, they know what you do.”

Surah al Infitar

About these guardian angels, Holy Quran says:

“When the two receivers receive, seated on the right and on the left. Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared (to record his deed).”

Al kaf

6: Hafaza the Guardian angels

These angels protect you from difficulties and misfortune. They are present at the front and back of a person and protect him day and night.

7: Munkar Nakir

These angles question a man in grave about all of the deeds that he performed throughout his life. It is believed that they expand the graves of believers and become good friends with the believers in their graves.

8: Ridwan

Ridwan is the guardian of paradise. He welcomes the prophets and believers who are blessed by God at the door of Jannah.

9: Malik

He is the guardian of hell fire. It is an unfortunate place for the wrong doers.

10: Muqarrabun

They are known as Asilliyun and Karubiyun. They have a very special place near God. Muqarrabun are always busy in glorifying and praising God. In Holy Quran God mentions them in Surah al Ghafir in following words:

“Those [angels] who carry the Throne and those around it exalt (God) with praise of their Lord and believe in Him and ask forgiveness for those who have believed.”

11: Habib

Holy Prophet (PBUH) met this angel on first heaven during his night journey to heavens. Gabriel told the Prophet that this angel gives advice to the believers on earth as well as prays for them.

12: Malak ul Jabal

Holy Prophet (PBUH) met this angel during his vist to Taif. When Holy Prophet was teased by the people of Taif, this angel appeared before the prophet and asked him that if Prophet commands he can perish the city.  

13: Dardail

Dardail are the name of angels that are constantly traveling in search of people and groups who mention and remember God’s name.

14: Zabaniyyah

They are name of angels of hell and torment the disbelievers. They are called as guardians of punishment. In Holy Quran God says:

“O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are (appointed) angels, harsh and severe, they do not disobey God in what He commands them but do what they are commanded.”
